Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/281/14039
Date
[? 1327-? 1332]
Description
Petitioners
William Bernard (Guilhem Bernat) de Sparre (Lesparre).
Name(s)
de Sparre (Lesparre), William Bernard (Guilhem Bernat)
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
William Bernard de Sparre states that his house, corn and wine to the value of £200 tournois have been destroyed by the French, because of his service to the king and his father in the war in Gascony. He asks that he might have compensation for his losses, and that he might be made a sergeant general in the Duchy.
Nature of endorsement
With regard to the losses, the king has understood that some compensation has been made in such a case, and will shortly send a suitable seneschal to those parts, who will inform himself of the losses and damages given and received, and the damages inflicted, and the condition of the people, and will act in such a manner that everyone will reasonably consider himself satisfied. With regard to the sergeanty, the king does not wish to increase the number of sergeants until he is apprised of the state of the Duchy.
Places mentioned
Agenais, [Guyenne, France]
Gascony, [France]
Duchy [of Aquitaine].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England
[Charles IV], King of France.
Note
This petition would seem to date from the beginning of the reign of Edward III, and from the mention of the sending of a new seneschal, to either around February 1327 (before the appointment of John de Haustede) or to around June 1332 (before the appointment of Oliver de Ingham). The dating of SC 8/282/14093, which has an identical endorsement, suggests that the latter date is more likely.
