Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/281/14037
Date
[? 1327-? 1332]
Description
Petitioners
Raymond (Ramon) de Mounthaut (Montaut).
Name(s)
de Mounthaut (Montaut), Raymond (Ramon)
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Raymond de Mounthaut states that his father had lands in the power of the king of England and of the king of France, but mostly in the power of the king of France; and that during the war he was not on one side or the other, but lived in France, and for most of the war was ill in bed. Raymond, his eldest son, has always been in the obeisance of the king of England, and still is, so that his younger siblings inherited the lands in France; but because of his father's residence in France, the Seneschal of Gascony has embargoed his lands in the power of the king of England: so that Raymond cannot have sustenance from either set of lands. He asks the king, of his grace, to let him have his inheritance.
Nature of endorsement
The king will shortly send a suitable seneschal into the said duchy, who will inform himself on the things contained in the petition, and will inform the king on this; and he will do him justice and reason.
Places mentioned
France
Gascony, [France].
People mentioned
[Charles IV], King of France.
Note
This petition clearly dates to the aftermath of the war of St Sardos, and is probably, like many of the other petitions in this file, from the early years of Edward III. New seneschals were appointed in February 1327 (John de Haustede) and June 1332 (Oliver de Ingham); m.8 of C 61/42 is dated 1 May 1330, which may suggest that a date of 1327 is more likely.
