Description
Petitioners
William Raymond (Guilhem Ramon) de Claure (Claverie), sergeant-at-arms.
Name(s)
de Claure (Claverie), William Raymond (Guilhem Ramon)
Addressees
King.
Occupation
sergeant-at-arms
Nature of request
William Raymond de Claure states that he has long served the king and his father, but received no reward for this service, but rather has lost his wages. He therefore petitioned the Northampton parliament to be given the bailiwicks of Seignanx and Gosse, to hold as Bernard de Pendas held them, and that an allowance might be given to him in the issues of these bailiwicks for the sum owed to him by the king for wages. He was granted the bailiwicks, and the seneschal and constable have delivered them to him, but because the sum due for the wages was not expressly mentioned in his letters for this grant, the seneschal and constable do not wish to allow it to him. He asks that his letters might be emended to mention this point expressly. He also requests a reward for his good service.
Nature of endorsement
He is to show the letter and the bills mentioned by this petition in Chancery, and if the letters are not suitable, they are to be amended in due form. With regard to rewarding him for his good service, the king will be advised when it pleases him to reward him and the others who have served him well and loyally according to their desert.
Places mentioned
Northampton, [Northamptonshire]
Ciens (Seignanx), [Gascony, France]
Gounz (Gosse), [Gascony, France]
Gascony, [France].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England
Bernard (Bernat) de Pendas.
Note
The original grant of the bailiwicks was made on 20 May 2 Edward III (1328) (m.5 of C 61/40), which agrees with the petitioner's reference to having petitioned the Northampton parliament of April 1328. The instructions to account with the petitioner on m.4 of C 61/41 are dated 24 August 1329, and are clearly in response to this petition.
