Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/281/14025
Date
[1327-1332]
Description
Petitioners
Peter Bernard (Pey Bernat) de Pynsole (Pinsole) of Bayonne, sergeant-at-arms.
Name(s)
de Pynsole (Pinsole), Peter Bernard (Pey Bernat)
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
sergeant-at-arms
Nature of request
Peter Bernard de Pynsole states that he is owed £157 13 s. 3 d. sterling for the costs that he and 100 companions incurred in guarding the Channel Islands in time of war in the reign of the king's father, and has only received £22 from the customs officers of Southampton. He asks that he might have payment of this sum, or that, in allowance for this debt and for the good service that he has done and will in future do, he might have the keeping of Bayonne castle for term of life, receiving the wages that others have received.
Nature of endorsement
The castellany of the castle contained in this petition is granted to Oliver de Burdeux.
Places mentioned
Bayonne, [Gascony, France]
Guernsey, Channel Islands
Jersey, Channel Islands
Southampton, [Hampshire].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England
Oliver (Olivier, Oliber) de Burdeux (Bordeaux, Bordeu).
Note
Datable to the beginning of the reign of Edward III by the hand and language, and by the mention of the king's father. The petitioner was granted part of this sum from the issues of the prevote of Bayonne, and then from those of the Duchy of Aquitaine (SC 8/284/14176). He was also granted the bailiwicks of Gosse and Seignanx near Bayonne on 23 September 1332 (Carte, vol. I p.79): this petition would seem to date from before that date.
