Reference
SC 8/281/14005
Date
[? 1327-? 1332]
Description
Petitioners
Raymond Bernard (Ramon Bernat) de Sentafort.
Name(s)
de Sentafort, Raymond Bernard (Ramon Bernat)
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Raymond Bernard de Sentafort makes two requests:1) He states that he has lost all his land and possessions in the service of the king and his father in the war in Gascony, and has been banished from the realm of France, and has received no compensation for his losses. He asks that he might have an allowance from the customs of Bordeaux or St Macaire, or wherever the king or council pleases, for the same amount as the annual rent he has lost.2) He asks that the present Constable of Gascony, or whoever will be Constable for the time being, might be ordered to pay him the wages that are due to him without delay.
Nature of endorsement
The king has understood that some compensation has been made in such a case, and will shortly send a suitable seneschal to those parts, who will inform himself of the losses and damages given and received, and the damages inflicted, and the condition of the people, and will act in such a manner that everyone will reasonably consider himself satisfied. With regard to his wages, the Constable of Bordeaux is to be ordered to account with him and to give him payment for what is due to him.Done with regard to the wages.
Places mentioned
Gascony, [France]
France
Bordeaux, [Guyenne, France]
St Macaire, [Guyenne, France].
People mentioned
[Edward II], King of England.
Note
Dated to c. 1333 on the guard with reference to an entry on m.3 of C 61/45 dated 3 August 1333: but this seems to be for a Raymond Bernard de Seyntefoy, and to concern a different matter (there are also more relevant instructions to pay him his wages on m.2, bearing the same date). Moreover, the mention on the dorse of a suitable seneschal to be sent does not accord with this date, when Oliver de Ingham had already been in office for at least six months. The petition would seem rather to date to before his appointment in June 1332, or before the appointment of John de Haustede in February 1327. The dating of SC 8/282/14093, which has an identical endorsement, suggests that the latter date is more likely.
