Sir John Jennings to Dartmouth on 15 December: the wind has come about northerly, and he has ordered the transports to Spithead to await the ships from the Downs. Dated at Portsmouth.
Resolution of a council of war held on board Ranelagh at Port Mahon on 15 December: General Stanhope with a considerable force has been taken prisoner [battle of Brihuega]. The king and queen of Spain have summoned Norris to Barcelona to confer. The council resolves to stay in Port Mahon until the Nottingham's rudder is repaired, and in the meantime to send five ships to Cagliari for what bread, flour or wheat can be got there.
Sir John Norris to Dartmouth on 21 December: Suffolk, Captain and Worcester have arrived with Dartmouth's instructions for transporting 4,000 troops from Italy to Catalonia. He held a council of war [see above] on 15 December. He can transport the 2,000 infantry and has asked Chetwynd to find transports for the cavalry. He has the queen's [Anne] letter to the dey of Algier, but cannot at present send it. He will demand Captain Mackdonall's boy from the grand duke of Tuscany. Dated on board Ranelagh at Port Mahon.
