Description

Sir John Norris to Dartmouth on 11 November: he sailed from Port Mahon on 30 October, capturing three French ships from Newfoundland on the way. The French have five or six ships cruising outside the strait, and the British seven under Captain Mighell. A council of war (enclosed) resolved that the nine ships in Gibraltar should proceed up the straits, which he will do at the first opportunity of weather. He hopes for a speedy arrival of the Dutch ships. Algier appears to be observing the peace treaty. Dated on board Ranelagh in Gibraltar Bay.

Resolution of a council of war held on board Blenheim in Gibraltar Bay on 10 November: the fleet should proceed up the straits for the coast of Spain and Catalonia and Minorca. Various places of rendezvous are set [2 copies].

Sir John Norris to Dartmouth on 12 November: Commodore Cornwall has come in with his squadron and the convoy for Turkey. Norris will accompany them as far as Port Mahon. A Major Bucknall of the garrison has been in Cadiz and has a plan of the place. Many gentlemen of the greatest consequence gave assurances of their support. He intends to take the major to Barcelona, from whence he can go to inform Stanhope and the king of his information. Dated on board Ranelagh in Gibraltar Bay [2 copies]. No. 96
