Sir John Norris to Dartmouth on 5 September: he is going with the count de Savilliard to collect troops from Tarragona for an attack on Valencia. The duke of Anjou [Philip V of Spain] has retired from Madrid and the king of Spain [Charles III] is expected there. Dated on board Ranelagh off Madrid.
Resolution of a council of war held on board HMS Ranelagh off Barcelona on 4/15 September: that in accordance with the king of Spain's [Charles III] instructions the fleet should sail for Tarragona to embark 1,000 infantry and attempt to land them near Valencia. The Dutch ships should commence their homeward voyage on 10/21 September. A clean ship is to be sent to the two ships cruising the straits [of Gibraltar] to warn them of the enemy.
