Description

Sir John Norris to the doge of Genoa on 29 July 1710, demanding payment of a debt of £62,649 14s 6d due to Angelo Corticelli and Joseph Como, merchants of London, from Luke Giustiniano. Dated on board Ranelagh in Vaia Bay.

Resolution of a council of war on HMS Ranelagh in Vaia Bay on 31 July 1710: considering that the French fleet has entered Toulon and the British corn convoy has passed for Barcelona, as soon as the expected troops and money from Genoa have arrived, the admiral should sail for Barcelona to receive the king of Spain's [Charles III] instruction, and join with the detached ships. If the wind permits he should he should provide an escort for the transports and storeships from Port Mahon bound for England. The Suffolk and Nassau, being clean, have been sent to protect the Leghorn coast, but the rest of the fleet is foul.

Sir John Norris to Dartmouth on 31 July 1710: he will observe the enemy's movements on the neutral coasts and attempt to destroy the privateer l'Aigle. He encloses a duplicate of his last letter to Sunderland, the council of war of that day's date and his letter to the Genoan republic. He recommend George Henshaw as consul in Genoa. Dated on board Ranelagh in Vaia Bay.

Resolution of a council of war held on board Ranelagh off Sète in 17 July 1710: Major General Seissan suggests that if the allies can capture Agde the country will rise in support in sufficient numbers to defend Sète [this appears to precede the council of war of 17 July above].

Resolution of a council of war held on board HMS Ranelagh before Sète on 18 July 1710: as superior French forces have dislodged the allies from Sète, it is resolved to return the troops to Barcelona and then cruise off Toulon.

Sir John Norris to Sunderland on 27 July 1710: he sailed to attack Sète on 9 July and debarked the troops on 13 July. Surrender of the town and fort. Capitulation and recapture of Agde. Arrival of enemy reinforcements under the dukes of Nouailles and Berwick. Evacuation of Sète and surrender of the fort. A council of war has determined to cruise off the coast of Provence. He commends Major General Seissan, whose family has been arrested. The fleet affected by bad weather and currents. Dated on board Ranelagh in Vaia Bay. PS. attack on a French flyboat. He intends to sail for the Catalonian coast.
