The series does include material generated by his predecessors and inherited by him. The predecessors of Master William Francis Hawkins (1933-1969), in his role as a Master/Chief Clerk, were Master Robert Thesiger Watkin-Williams (1910-1932), Master Charles Burney (1877-1909), Master Edmund Boyle Church (1864-1876) and, for causes with initial letters A-F, Master George Whiting (1852-1863).

These documents were originally submitted to the court by claimants to the estates of deceased persons, and their preservation appears to stem from a Disposal Schedule of 16 August 1895, which expressly excluded like documents from destruction.
