Government of Genoa to Sir John Norris of [?July] 1710 stating its neutrality, defending the duke of Turcis and stressing its desire for peace and commerce with the queen of Great Britain. In Italian.
Sir John Norris to Sunderland on 7 July 1710: account of his voyage from Ajaccio to Barcelona. The king of Spain [Charles III] ordered him to disembark the troops near Valencia and then join the fleet at Tarragona. A council of war was held and the fleet sailed immediately for Tarragona. There he landed the troops and received a letter from the king of Spain ordering him to attack the magazine at Vinaroz, send a convoy to fetch 300 horses from Sardinia and split the fleet in two, so as to appear on the coasts of Valencia and Roussillon at the same time. After a council of war he sailed from Tarragona and was joined by Vice Admiral Baker's squadron. But Vinaroz was strongly defended, and he was informed by a Genoan there were no magazines there. He sailed westward for a day or two then returned to Barcelona. He has sent ships to collect Colonel Stanhope's regiment and 300 men from Port Mahon. His correspondence with the Genoan republic. Dated on board HMS Ranelagh in Barcelona Road.
