HO 47/39/48
1807 Oct 22
Report of William Elias Taunton junior, Recorder of the City of Oxford, on 1 collective petition (5 people, each saved from loss of property by information given by the prisoner) on behalf of John Pennis, convicted at the City of Oxford Quarter Sessions on 25 August 1807, for stealing a saucepan and other items, property of Stephen Haynes. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner gave evidence against Charles Collis and Charles Rose at their trials for stealing and receiving copper without which evidence a conviction could not be secured (the goods belonged to Lawrence Wyatt and Robert Wyatt), he gave information to William Hall, Mark Morrell and James Morrell, brewers of Oxford, of plans to rob their counting houses thus averting their loss. Initial sentence: 6 months in prison. Recommendation: speaks in favour of mercy. Folios 425-427.
