Description

Report of James Clark Satterthwaite, Chairman of the Cumberland Quarter Sessions, on 2 collective petitions (the prisoner and Margaret Johnstone, his wife and his 'Six Infant Children', unsigned); and 40 people, of Carlisle, some trades given) on behalf of John Routledge, joiner and master cabinetmaker, convicted at the last Cumberland Quarter Sessions at Cockermouth, of stealing a coat, property of William Fenwick, of Kingmoor, 'last' November. There is a certified copy of the parish register of Stapleton showing the baptism of John Routledge, son of Thomas Routledge of the parish of Luckens, Stapleton, Cumberland. Grounds for clemency: has lived in Carlisle for between 30-40 years, previous good character, the prisoner has a wife and 6 infant children, is infirm, has broken a leg, claims kinship (through his wife) to eminent military characters (listed; some having served at Quebeck) and is believed to be an honest and industrious tradesman, the coat was found in a box belonging to one of two lodgers who have now escaped, the jury initially acquitted him but this not being precise enough they had to bring in a second verdict (this time guilty), the petitioners are respectable people. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: speaks against mercy, the petition and its signatories are unfounded, most are not known in Carlisle and one is a deserter from the militia now under confinement. Annotated: 'Since proceeded upon + discharged'. Folios 410-413.
