Letter from Henry Hawley, Chairman of the Maidstone Quarter Sessions, on behalf of George Bushnan convicted at the 'last Lent assizes' [Kent Assizes] of stealing linen frocks [an overall], value of 15/-, property of HM Dockyard at Deptford in Kent. Grounds for clemency: prisoner had thwarted a breakout of some 5 or 6 prisoners by advising the keeper of their intentions by disclosing the existence of a rope ladder. Initial sentence: 12 months in the Maidstone Bridewell and a fine of 1/-. Recommendation: remission of the remainder of his sentence. Folios 408-409.
