Report of Lewis Majendie on 1 individual petition (Sir Robert Lawley) on behalf of Mary Grape, convicted at the 'last' Essex Quarter Sessions at Chelmsford, for obtaining a sum of money by fraud/false pretences from George Pitt, victualler at the Bird In Hand Inn, Stratford, on 22 and 24 May [1805]. Evidences supplied by George Pitt, Elizabeth Breens and Mary Ann Foulger. Grounds for clemency: the prisoner had 5 children, her husband had deserted her (he joined the army and then deserted), was promised a lenient sentence, prisoner was forced to provide for her family, the prisoner is the sister to Lawley's Bailiff who is himself (and his family) industrious, and Lawley has arranged for the prisoner to be taken in by relatives and given work. Initial sentence: 7 years transportation. Recommendation: none given. Folios 440-449.
