Administrative / biographical background

During the Commonwealth period the administration of the country was almost entirely in the hands of parliamentary committees which were eventually brought under the control of the Council of State. Such were the Committee for the Advance of Money, the Admiralty Committee and the Navy Commissioners, the Committee for taking the Accounts of the Kingdom, the Committee for Both Kingdoms or Derby House Committee, and the Committee for Plundered Ministers and the Committee for the Sequestration of Delinquents' Estates, which was superseded by a Committee for Compounding for the Estates of Royalists and Delinquents.
