1876-1881
The affidavits in this series arise from civil actions in the Common Pleas Division of the High Court of Justice and consist of sworn written statements given in evidence. They include affidavits (CP 3) of the Court of Common Pleas, whose jurisdiction passed to the Common Pleas Division of the newly-formed High Court of Justice in 1875.
They are contained in boxes and consist mainly of answers, sometimes printed, of plaintiffs and defendants to interrogatories arising from disputes concerning contracts, business agreements, shipping surveys and the like. They extend until 1881 when the Common Pleas Division ceased to exist as a distinct entity and its business was passed to the Queen's Bench Division by an order in Council of 16 December 1880.
The affidavits in this series are listed in date order.
For other related material in Common Pleas Division cases, see the cause books, which include the date and nature of the judgement, in IND 1/9045-9114
For examination of witnesses, see CP 22
