Folios 120-123. Covering letter from Messrs Bell and Brodrick, Yorkshire, concerning the death of Miss Ann Tilburn. Encloses a letter from Messrs Thorpe and Gray to Messrs Ball and Brodrick, dated 3 January 1822, giving a full account of events. A length of cord tied across the road made Miss Tilburn's horse rear and throw her from her carriage[?]. There was a Christening party at a neighbouring house and it is thought that the cord may have been placed by some of the young men to trip the young women. There is some doubt as to whether it counts as murder, manslaughter, assault or just a misdemeanour. A £50 reward has been offered and Thorpe and Gray are asking if a pardon could also be offered. A sample of the cord is attached.
