Administrative / biographical background

The Joint Air Transport Establishment was formed in 1968 to control the activities of the Air Transport Development Unit and the Army Air Transport Training and Development Centre. These had previously operated independently, though under a variety of titles, from 1943 when they were created, under their respective services, to develop equipment etc. for airborne operations. On the RAF side these activities were associated particularly with Transport Command.
