Debtor: Edward Hawte, the son and heir of James Hawte, esquire, deceased.

Creditor: James Brown, citizen and draper, of London.

Amount: £100.

Before whom: William Brown the younger, Mayor of the Staple of Westminster.

Writ to: Sheriff of Kent

Sent by: Chancery.

Endorsement: Reginald Peckham {Pekham}, Sheriff, replies that Edward was not found in the bailiwick. The execution of the rest of the writ appears in the inquisition.

Inquisition and return: Date to be returned: 13/10/1509. Attached is the inquisition made at Cuxton in Kent [in Shamwell Hundred] on 13/09/1509. At the time of the recognisance James Hawte, the father of Edward, was seised in demesne, to the use of Edward Hawte, of the Manors of Elmsted [in Stowting Hundred] and Bearstead {Borsted} in Kent [in Eyhorne and Maidstone Hundreds], and certain lands in the Parish of Wrotham [in Wrotham Hundred], called Chapel-Land, and of certain other lands and tenements in Wrotham [in Wrotham Hundred], and in Dover, which the Prior of Dover now holds at farm. The Manor of Elmsted is worth 5s. a year after the payment of an annual rent of 53s. 4d. to Alan, the brother of Edward, for his life, and after certain other payments. The Manor of Bearstead, and Chapel-Land, with the other lands and tenements in Wrotham, are worth £5 13s. The tenements and lands in Dover are worth 35s. a year. The Sheriff has seized them all into the King's hands.
