Description

Debtor: Joan Clark, otherwise called Joan Birstowe, of the Parish of Upminster {Ukmyster} in Essex [Chafford Hundred], widow, and John Cumming {Comyn}, of the same parish, tanner, now married to her.

Creditor: Richard Stote, citizen and draper, of London.

Amount: £100.

Before whom: Henry Colet, Mayor of the Staple of Westminster.

When taken: 07/06/1505

First term: 24/06/1505

Last term: 24/06/1505

Writ to: Sheriff of Essex

Sent by: Chancery.

Endorsement: Humphrey Torell, Sheriff, replies that he has imprisoned Joan and seized all her chattels into the King's hands.

Inquisition and return: Date to be returned: 22/04/1509. Attached is: (a) Another writ, dated 20/05/1509, requiring information about the execution of the earlier one; it is endorsed: the execution of this writ appears in the inquisition. (b) The inquisition made at Chelmsford on Fri., 23/03/1509, before Humphrey Torell, Sheriff. The jury say that John Cumming has 6 heiffers, 3 young bullocks, called yearlings, and 4 calves, worth 70s.; a foal, called a horse-colt, 31 mother ewes, and 20 lambs, worth 53s. 4d.; also, 5 qrs of of oats, worth 8s. 4d. At the time of the recognisance Joan was seised in demesne of a cottage and a garden in North Ockendon [in Chafford Hundred], worth 5s. a year. The Sheriff has seized all the property into the King's hands.
