Endorsement: Reply of William Bateman, Sheriff: he has delivered to John Hake the land, etc., contained in the writ. William Wollaston was not found in the bailiwick.

Inquisition and return: Date given for return to Chancery: 6.10.1398 The Sheriff replied to an earlier writ that William was not found in the bailiwick but he had on the day of the recognisance in the right of his wife, Joan, for her life, a tenement called Smermongers in the parish of Bengeo [Hertford Hundred], 70 acres of land, 8 acres of meadow, and 9 acres of woodland in the vills of Bengeo and Standon [Braughing Hundred] worth 5m. a year. He delivered it to John to repay the outstanding debt, with damages and expenses, of £30 16s. 8d.
