[c. 1303]
Description
Petitioners
Robert Martyn of Bristol, clerk.
Name(s)
Martyn, Robert
Addressees
[Not specified.]
Occupation
clerk
Nature of request
Request, presumably from Martyn himself, that he be allowed to appoint Gylewyn to perform the office of keeper of the smaller piece of the seal for recognisances of debt in Bristol if he is absent for reasonable cause. This follows a copy a writ of Edward I, dated at Odiham on 8 January 1303, ordering the removal of Staunton from this office, as an inquisition held by Fermbaud has found that he does not reside there or perform the office satisfactorily. At the request of Mary, the king's daughter, nun of Amesbury, the office was to be granted to Martyn.
Nature of endorsement
[None]
Places mentioned
Bristol
Amesbury, [Wiltshire]
Odiham, [Hampshire].
People mentioned
Nicholas Fermbaud, constable of Bristol
William de Staunton, clerk
Mary, daughter of Edward I, nun of Amesbury
William Gylewyn, clerk.
Note
As recorded, Martyn was appointed to the office on 8 January 1303, and this request must date from some time thereafter. It was probably relatively soon after the original grant, but could have been any time before the death of Edward I in 1307.
