Date
[c. 1308-c. 1327]
Description
Petitioners
Abbot and convent of Newenham.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The abbot and convent request remedy concerning the church of Axminster which was granted to them by Edward I, but which they lost by the suit of Crancombe and Hamedone, and by their procurement of Richard lately deposed as abbot of Newenham who took their charter and destroyed it before the justices, Crancombe and Hamedone then ousting the abbot and convent's clerk without the assent of their bishop.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Newenham, [Devon]
Axminster, [Devon]
York.
People mentioned
Nicholas IV, Pope
John de Ileminstre (Ilminster), clerk of Newenham Abbey
John de Crancombe, canon of York
William de Hamedone, canon of York
Richard [de Chichester], late Abbot of Newenham.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1308-c. 1327 as the petition is clearly of Edward II's reign by internal references, and after 1308 when John de Craucombe, one of the prebendaries mentioned in the petition, died, internal evidence revealing that he had died and been succeeded by other canons. The guard note suggests c. 1315, but on what basis is unclear.
