Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/323/E582
Date
[1299-1300]
Description
Petitioners
Keepers of the archbishopric of York.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The keepers request that sums that they have received in pollards and crockards from various bailiwicks be allowed as they were not warned about this before Christmas.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
York archbishopric
Churchdown, [Gloucestershire]
Ripon, [West Riding of Yorkshire]
Beverley, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
Southwell, [Nottinghamshire].
People mentioned
Roger Goldston, bailiff of Churchdown.
Note
The petition is dated to 1299-1300 because it seems likely that the petition dates to the period of vacancy in the see of York after the death of Archbishop Henry Newark in August 1299, and the delivery of the temporalities of the see to his successor, Thomas Corbridge. In addition, entries in the patent rolls suggest that the problem of pollard and crockard coins was very current in that period (CPR 1292-1301, pp. 435, 510-1).
