Description

John de Castre; William de Mulcastre (Muncaster); Gilbert de Culwenn' (Culwen); John de Lucy; Alexander de Bastonthwayt (Bassenthwaite); Andrew de Harcla.
Name(s)
de Castre; de Mulcastre (Muncaster); de Culwenn' (Culwen); de Lucy; de Bastonthwayt (Bassenthwaite); de Harcla, John; William; Gilbert; John; Alexander; Andrew
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The petitioners request that they be acquitted of the demand made upon them out of the pipe of the Exchequer for their periods as sheriff for 10 marks of issues from the forest of Carlisle that ought to be rendered at the exchequer of Carlisle and that the executors of Vescy the chief forester be charged with it, and Michael Harcla be acquitted of 100 marks for the ten years that he was sheriff. The office of hereditary forester came into the king's hand by forfeiture for Multon's participation in de Montfort's war against Henry III, and the office has been in the gift of the justices, and the sum neglected since that time.Copy of a writ to the sheriff of Cumberland on the matter.
Nature of endorsement
He should await the coming of the treasurer.
Places mentioned
Cumberland
Carlisle Forest
Carlisle, [Cumberland]
Gilsland, [Cumberland].
People mentioned
Thomas de Multon of Gilsland
Simon de Mounfort (Montfort)
William de Vescy, late justice north of the Trent
Michael de Harcla, late sheriff of Cumberland.
Note
The petition is dated to 1318 as the earliest time that all of the petitioners had served as sheriff, was 1311, but the petitioners are described in such a way that it is clear that none was then in office, and this would mean that the petition must almost certainly date to 1318 as this was the first time that none of the petitioners was in office since 1298 (List of Sheriffs, p.26). If the petition was later, one might have expected other former sheriffs to be named.
