Reference
SC 8/323/E564
Date
[1307-1327]
Description
Petitioners
Dean and chapter of the church of St Peter, York.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
[Petition in four parts:]1) They request that the points of their charter be declared as the king's progenitors granted that no sheriff or other minister of the king can enter their lands to make distraint, but some do as the charter does not state whether it is within or without the city.2) They request a similar declaration concerning the point that the dean, chapter and the canons or their men in pleas by or against them should not be held elsewhere than . . . of the church, as the bailiffs of the city of York badly interpret this to relate only to the villeins of the petitioners, and not to their other tenants.3) They request confirmation of Henry III granting the archbishop and the petitioners the right to have a coroner in the city of York, and that they may use the privilege as it has not been used before.4) They request that none of their men or tenants be dealt with before the seneschal, marshal or clerk of market if it isn't in default of their bailiff who has failed to do right to them. They also request a licence to have a pillory and tumbrel within their own soil in the city of York to do justice of their own tenants of the city who trespass against the assizes of bread and ale by their own bailiffs.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
York.
Note
The petition is dated to 1307-1327 as the third part of the petition refers to King Henry, the king's grandfather - Henry III.
