[c. 1290-c. 1307]
Description
Petitioners
William de Derfold.
Name(s)
de Derfold, William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Derfold requests that the justices of the Bench be commanded to proceed to judgment in his assize of novel disseisin against Osmund for land in Horseheath and Shudy Camps. He recovered the land before Vaus against Osmund, but he sued to the bishop of Winchester and his companions who had been assigned to hear the trespasses of ministers of the king and Osmund wrongfully recovered seisin. Derfold has petitioned in parliament and to the council but the justices assigned to hear his suit will not proceed despite various writs and letters of the privy seal.
Nature of endorsement
An inhibition was ordered to the justices by the king so that they did not interfere with the acts of the bishop of Winchester and the other auditors assigned [...]
Places mentioned
Cambridgeshire
Horseheath, [Cambridgeshire]
Shudy Camps, [Cambridgeshire].
People mentioned
John de Vaus, justice in eyre in Cambridgeshire
Alan Osemund (Osmund)
Bishop of Winchester.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1290-c. 1307 as reference is made to auditors assigned to hear cases of trespass against ministers of the king, and it seems likely that this is a reference to the provision made by Edward I late in 1289. As the petitioner seems to have been considerably delayed in his suit it seems likely that the petition is quite some time later.
