Nature of request
Bere shows the many deceits and treasons of the king's money and of the hey of Sherwood that Poutrel and his sons have committed and continue to commit:1) Poutrel cut wood in the Bestwood for the weir and mills of the castle but sold the best wood in Nottingham market but entered the same in his account.2) Poutrel ought to have only one cart going to Bestwood for the works of the king, but he has four, each of his sons having a cart.3) Poutrel charges in his account for more people and carts working on the castle than he actually has.4) Where Poutrel has put in his account that he has expended 10 or 20 marks, he has not expended the half.5) Poutrel pays his sons more for carting than others though they have carts with only one horse and they have two.6) He charges more in his account for lead than he has actually expended.7) He similarly overcharges for constructing chimneys [or perhaps 'roads'] as is attested by the masons.8) Poutrel and his sons take timber from the gins of the castle and lead and carry to their own houses in Nottingham.Bere states that all of this waste and destruction is made because Poutrel and his sons have the castle and Bestwood at their will, whereof she requests that this matter can be enquired of by the country and remedy provided.
