Reference
SC 8/322/E528
Date
[1307]
Description
Petitioners
John de Fereres (Ferrers).
Name(s)
de Fereres (Ferrers), John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Fereres requests remedy and right be done to him as Walter de Langton the treasurer has intervened twice in matters concerning the petitioner against the statutes ordained on those matters and in champerty. In the first case in which Fereres demanded the manor of Newbottle against William Ferrers the treasurer took the manor for life so that he cannot have recovery, and in the second he has caused a suit by which one of the sons of John Bigod impleaded the petitioner to continue when Bigod should have been left without a day because of bastardy.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Newbottle, Northamptonshire
Bugbrooke, [Northamptonshire].
People mentioned
William de Langeton (Langton), Treasurer
William de Fereres (Ferrers)
John Bygod (Bigod)
Ralph [Bygod (Bigod)], son of John Bigod
Gilbert de Roubury, justice of the Bench.
Note
The petition is dated to 1307 because the petition is a complaint against the treasurer, Walter Langton, but is clearly after March 1307, as all of the copies of writs that were formerly enclosed with this petition are dated at Carlisle in March, which must be in 1307 following the parliament in January at the same place. It is possible that the petition dates to after the death of Edward I on 7 July 1307, and in the period from 19 July to 22 August 1307 when Langton formerly remained in office, but had probably ceased to act in his capacity as treasurer, and the appointment of his successor, William Reynolds (Handbook of British Chronology, p. 104). Langton fell from favour following the death of Edward I, and it seems likely that this petition is an early example of the complaints made against him for abuse of power.
