The abbot requests that he can either enjoy his own, or that the king will defend him in all things as he is troubled by many pleas in the king's court and elsewhere and as he has nothing by which he is able to defend himself, his estate and things are not well defended, the king taking the value from them.

Note
The petition dates to c. 1294-c. 1297 as references to the appointment of monks of the abbey to the custody of the land, and to the restoration of the lands of the abbey to the proctor of the abbot, if not directly relating to the petition, must be close in date (CPR 1292-1301, pp. 74, 241).
