The brothers and sisters request remedy and that it be commanded that the bishop of Carlisle have the keeping of their house as his predecessors did and as was attested by their burnt charter. The bishop was always their protector, but now Cressingham has seized the hospital into the king's hand by quo warranto, because their charters of witness were burnt in the great fire of Carlisle since when they have had no sustenance because their rents, houses, livelihood are ruined through want of protection.

Note
The petition is dated by Fraser to 1296-1297, though the exact basis of the dating is unclear (Northern Petitions, pp.110-1 (no.76)). The guard notes refer to the great fire of Carlisle in 1292 and suggest that the petition was presented before the death of Hugh de Cressingham in 1297.
