Date
[c. 1290-c. 1307]
Description
Petitioners
People of Kirkby in Kendal.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The people request that they can be assessed according to the goods and chattels that they have now, as there town together with their goods and chattels were burnt and they are all poor and beggars. The assessors came and wished to tax them according to their possessions at Michaelmas not wishing to have regard to what happened to them a month later.
Nature of endorsement
Let nothing be done.
Places mentioned
Kirkby in Kendal (Kendal), [Westmorland].
Note
The petition is speculatively dated to c. 1290-c. 1307 as the petition is dated to 'temp. Edw. I' by Fraser, and the fire seems to have been a natural occurrence, a petition of a later date being likely to have referred to burning by the Scots.
