John Lovekin, son of Adam Lovekin of Havering.
Name(s)
Lovekin, John
Addressees
King and council
Nature of request
Lovekin requests that the king will grant him his charter of peace for the king's profit for the death of John Smart for when he was one of the parkers of Havering various malefactors came to the park and killed the beasts, and Lovekin and his companions and others of the country chased the malefactors and he killed Smart who was one of the malefactors but was subsequently indicted by Champ before the justices of trailbaston.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Havering atte Bower, Essex
Gosefeud (Gosfield), [Essex].
People mentioned
John Smart of Gosfield
Philip du Champ.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1309 as the petitioner was granted a pardon for his failure to appear before the justices of oyer and terminer to answer concerning this death (CPR 1307-13, p. 156). The petition appears to be requesting a pardon for the death, and not for the non-appearance, so although it seems unlikely that the petition and pardon are very in different in date, the pardon does not appear to be in response to the petition itself.
