Reference
SC 8/321/E497
Date
[c. 1307]
Description
Petitioners
Robert de Merchant.
Name(s)
de Merchant, Robert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Merchant requests that his petition is sent to the justices and that they view it and make hasty remedy as he was impleaded by the prior of Coventry and pleaded to inquisition when he was essoined by service to the king, but the bishop of Chester came and declared that he was not in the king's service and Merchant was held in default and his body seized and held in the Tower, whereafter the bishop has committed many extortions against him by his lordship because he coveted his lands in Coventry to his great ruin.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Coventry, [Warwickshire]
Tower of London, London.
People mentioned
Prior of Coventry
Walter [Langton], Bishop of Chester (Coventry and Lichfield).
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1307 because the petition refers to Walter Langton as bishop of Chester and office holder of Edward I, the king's father, and it is also clear that Langton is out of office. As this is clearly early in the reign of Edward II it is likely that it dates to not long after Langton's fall from favour in the first weeks of the new reign, an opportune time for those with grievances against the former treasurer.
