Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/321/E488
Date
[1322-1327]
Description
Petitioners
Henry de Bellerby.
Name(s)
de Bellerby, Henry
Addressees
Treasurer.
Nature of request
Bellerby requests the custody of the lands of the heir of John Cokes according to statute and paying to the king the true value. He is the brother of the heir's mother and the lands were seized into the king's hand by the escheator of Yorkshire because of the king's custody of the heir of the heir of Lord Mowbray of Axholme.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Hovingham, [North Riding of Yorkshire]
Axholme, [Lincolnshire].
People mentioned
John Cokes of Hovingham
Emma Cokes, widow of John Cokes, and sister of the petitioner
Lord Mowbray of Axholme.
Note
The petition is dated to 1322-1327 which was a period of minority for the Mowbray of Axholme heir, a date supported by the hand. This is slightly complicated because the minority followed the execution and forfeiture of John de Mowbray in 1322 following his participation in the Lancaster rebellion, so that the heir was not technically a ward and was only restored with the accession of Edward III in 1327 (Complete Peerage, vol. IX, pp.379-81). However, the only alternative date, 1297-1306 seems too early for the hand (Complete Peerage, vol. IX, pp.376-78).
