Description
Petitioners
John Bigot (Bigod), tenant of the manor of Settrington.
Name(s)
Bigot (Bigod), John
Addressees
King.
Nature of request
Bigot requests remedy and that as a tenant in service he be acquitted of the scutage demanded from him for the manor of Settrington, or that he can attorn himself to him by virtue of the first grant and he be acquitted as the king's father granted to the earl of Norfolk that he could grant the manor of Settrington to John and Isabel Bigod for their lives, and after their death to their son John [the petitioner], but they are not vested with the manor except in demesne which contains one fee but are still charged for three scutages.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Settrington, [East Riding of] Yorkshire
Stockton on the Forest, [East Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Roger Bigot (Bigod), earl of Norfolk and marshal of England
John Bigot (Bigod) of Stockton
Isabel [Bigot (Bigod)], wife of John Bigod of Stockton
Roger [Bigot (Bigod)], brother of the petitioner
William de Heweden, collector of the scutage
John de Malbys, collector of the scutage.
Note
The petition is dated to 1307-1327 as the petition is clearly of the reign of Edward II referring to the grant of the king's father to the last Bigod earl of Norfolk who died in 1306. It seems likely that the petition is earlier in the reign.
