Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/321/E464
Date
[c. 1298-c. 1310]
Description
Petitioners
Bishop of Ely.
Addressees
King.
Occupation
Bishop of Ely
Nature of request
The bishop requests the king's mitigation and grace as the bishop's predecessor near his death left the oxen and horses in the manors of the bishop to his successor according to the ancient custom used there, but the keepers appointed during the vacancy ploughed and harrowed part of the land in the manors with the oxen and carried away the hay found in the manors and have charged the bishop with a great sum of silver in their accounts for the hay and works as if they had been bought with the king's money.
Nature of endorsement
He should await that plea.
Places mentioned
Ely bishopric.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1298-c. 1310 as the petition is clearly shortly into a new pontificate at Ely, and the hand seems appropriate for a petition of the early fourteenth century. There were vacancies in 1298-9, 1302 and 1310 all of which occurred at about the right time and for the right duration for the keepers to plough the demesnes of the bishop. The vacancy in 1316 occurred too late in the year (May) for the reference to ploughing to be relevant.
