Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/321/E457
Date
[c. 1300]
Description
Petitioners
? Canons of the free chapel of Hastings.
Addressees
[Not legible].
Nature of request
[The petition is in many parts illegible or only semi-legible so that the full sense of the petition is difficult to discern. The petition refers to the malice of Henry Garland towards the chapel, and the procurement of an inquisition to be made by the constable of Dover and the keeper of the Cinque Ports. The request is that the archbishop of Canterbury be required to repeal his sentence and sequestration until the king's right and the archbishop's claim are tried and the evidences of the canons and ministers of the chapel can be searched].
Nature of endorsement
[On face:]This petition is for the king.[On dorse, none].
Places mentioned
Hastings, [Sussex].
People mentioned
William de C[C...]
Ralph de Morlaw
Henry Garland, then Archdeacon of Lewes
Constable of Dover
Keeper of the Cinque Ports
John de Wyk (Wick), under-constable of the castle of Hastings
William de Lewes
Bishop of Chichester
Archbishop of Canterbury.
Note
Henry Garland was prebendary of Thorney in Chichester Cathedral by 1298, possibly having served as archdeacon of Lewes before that date. The hand of the petition suggests that it cannot date from the later stages of Garland's career, when he went on to serve as dean of Chichester, 1318-40. See Fasti Ecclesiae Anglicana, Chichester, pp. 4, 8, 45.
