Reference
SC 8/319/E408
Date
[? 1332]
Description
Petitioners
Burgesses of Corbridge.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The burgesses request a grant of pontage as they are totally ruined by the Scots and have nothing on which to live and maintain the bridge. There is only the bridge at Newcastle for merchants to cross, and they understand that they hold in chief of the king since the death of Clavering, their lord.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.
Places mentioned
Corbridge, [Northumberland]
Newcastle upon Tyne, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
John de Clavereng (Clavering).
Note
The petition is dated to? 1332 as mention is made of the death of John de Clavering and he appears to have died in late 1331 or early 1332 when the escheators were ordered to take his lands into the king's hand (CFR 1327-37, p.293). The bailiffs and men of the town were granted pontage on 16 March 1327 (CPR 1327-30, p.35), but in the light of the fine roll references, this now appears too early. The grant of pontage in 1336 seems unlikely to relate to this petition as the grant is to Henry de Percy, lord of Corbridge, and not to the people of the town (CPR 1334-8, p.234).
