Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/319/E399
Date
[c. 1318]
Description
Petitioners
Geoffrey Russel (Russell).
Name(s)
Russel (Russell), Geoffrey
Addressees
King.
Places mentioned
Roxburgh, [Roxburghshire, Scotland]
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland].
Nature of request
Russel requests that the king will assign and order where he is able to have his sustenance until he is able, with the aid of the king, to recover his bailiwick, as the king sent letters to various abbeys to provide sustenance but he was unable to be received. He served the king's father for 36 years as valet of his butlery, and the king for 10 years in the war of Scotland first at Roxburgh as coroner, and when that was lost, in the garrison of Berwick Castle until he was forced to quit it because of hardship and his enfeeblement.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1318 as the petitioner refers to his service to the king for ten years, and service in the garrison at Berwick, though the petitioner seems to have quitted Berwick before its capture by the Scots. The date of 1317 suggested by Bain might be right (Bain, vol. III, no.585).
