Reference
SC 8/319/E396
Date
[1311-? 1320]
Description
Petitioners
William de Kelpyn.
Name(s)
de Kelpyn, William
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Kelpyn requests an allowance as when he was in the company of Gaveston at Berwick he bought hides and salmon at Dundee and Perth and shipped them towards London, but the ship was taken by Calaisera off of Newbiggin and the crew killed and the goods were taken into the king's hand. He has attempted to recover them without success and he is of too little power to pursue the matter in Chancery.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et magno consilio.
Places mentioned
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland]
Dundee, [Forfarshire, Scotland]
Seint Johan of Pierth (Perth), [Perthshire, Scotland]
Newbiggin-by-the-sea, [Northumberland]
London.
People mentioned
Piers de Gavaston (Gaveston), Earl of Cornwall
Caleiser
John le Clerk, burgess of Newbiggin
Henry de Percy
William de Melton.
Note
The petition is dated to 1311-? 1320 as the petitioner refers to events in 4 Edw. II and it seems unlikely that this petition would be too many years later. It is possible that the petition dates to c. 1318 like many of this petition contained within this file.
