SC 8/319/E374
Date
[c. 1318]
Description
Petitioners
John Baudewyn (Baldwin), son of Thomas Baldwin, knight, late burgess of Berwick.
Name(s)
Baudewyn (Baldwin), John
Addressees
King and council.
Occupation
burgess of Berwick
Nature of request
Baudewyn states that he has served the king in his Scottish wars without taking a penny, and that he did not agree to the keeping of the town being entrusted to the burgesses because he always warned that the town would be lost because of their greed and inexperience. He requests that this be enquired into for the king's profit so that it may be known who was responsible for the loss of the town, and pity be taken on those who were not: he requests sustenance for him and his wife and children as he lost everything in the town and afterwards had to ransom his wife and children from prison, his eldest son still being a hostage.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege.
Places mentioned
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland].
Note
The petition dates to c. 1318 as it is clearly in the aftermath of the fall of Berwick to the Scots in that year.
