Reference
SC 8/319/E372
Date
[1300-1324]
Description
Petitioners
Prior and canons of Carlisle.
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
The prior and convent request that the king will grant the hospital of St Nicholas outside Carlisle to them for the damages and losses that they have from the Scots. The prior and convent held the hospital by gift of the king's ancestors with a canon singing for the souls of the kings until the bishop of Carlisle ousted them put in one of his clerks. The bishop was himself ousted in the eyre by Cressingham by a quo warranto and the position has been granted to a clerk of Chancery who does not sing.
Nature of endorsement
Coram rege et consilio.
Places mentioned
Carlisle, [Cumberland].
People mentioned
Hugh [de Beaulieu], Bishop of Carlisle
Hugh de Cressingham
John [of Halton], Bishop of Carlisle.
Note
The petition is dated to 1300-1324 as it is stated in the petition that John of Halton was bishop of Carlisle at that time and he held that office from 1292-1324, though the hand would indicate an early fourteenth century petition. It is quite possible that the petition actually dates to c. 1318 like many of the other petitions in this file, and forms part of an original file which is found in the last few petitions of file 318 and this file.
