Nature of request
[The petition is damaged with small parts missing and other parts of the right-hand side of the document being barely legible.]The men request remedy concerning an ancient debt from the time of King Henry and that the beasts distrained for the debt be restored and the sheriff be commanded to cease his duress until the debt can be tried in parliament or before the barons of the Exchequer and the assignment made upon the debt repealed as the debt was clear. The debt currently on demand is for arrears of their farm for three years in the reign of Henry III, and for charges for purprestures made by them which were subsequently submerged by the Thames, as was found by an inquisition.
