Full description and record details

Reference
SC 8/318/E325
Date
[c. 1312]
Description
Petitioners
John Sampson.
Name(s)
Sampson, John
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Sampson requests that the duress suffered by him be amended or that the king render the custody of Scarborough Castle which the king's father granted him as the abbot of Kirkstall has detained against the king's commission his farm of £20 which the king assigned to Sampson for his maintenance to be taken for the term of his life.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Kirkstall, [West Riding of Yorkshire]
[Scarborough, North Riding of Yorkshire].
People mentioned
Abbot of Kirkstall.
Note
The petition is dated to c. 1312 as the petitioner was granted the £20 annuity on 23 January 1312 (CPR 1307-13, p.414). However, this was shortly followed by an order to the abbot of Kirkstall to cease paying the petitioner, so that it is possible that the petition does date to 1312 itself, though it is not clear why the abbot was so ordered, or whether the petition is of a later date (CCR 1307-13, p.403).
