Brittayn requests a writ to the sheriff of Northumberland to cease his distresses that he makes on the land of the earl that he has of John Balliol's in Northumberland during the time of the war for farms with which the lands are charged in part towards the king as they are all burnt and he can take no profit from them.

The petition is dated to c. 1318 on the basis of the dating given on the guard that associates it with the dating of the remainder of this file. Fraser concurs with this dating, dating it to the period 1315-22, the time of Scottish incursions into northern England (Northumberland Petitions, p.118).The earl was making similar requests for religious houses in northern England in late 1318 [CPR 1317-21, pp.223, 252].
