Description
Petitioners
? No Petitioner named
Nature of request
Letter of the mayor, bailiffs and commonalty of Berwick to the king stating that Irrois came to Berwick and requested that he could go to the west to harass the enemy and he was given leave to do so. He returned with his well-armed men and they are staying in defence of the town up to the date of this letter.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Berwick-upon-Tweed, [Northumberland].
People mentioned
Mayor, bailiffs and commonalty of the town of Berwick
Edward II, King of England
John le Irrois (Irish).
Note
The letter is dated to 1317 on the basis of the dating given by Constance Fraser (Northern Petitions, p.62)). The note attached to this petition and Fraser's discussion of the two documents points to the discrepancy in the internal evidence as to the dating of the petitions, but it seems likely that they are contemporary and refer to the same events.
