Nature of request
Information from the [keeper] of Berwick that le Hireis came to him at Berwick and requested to go to Carlisle to harass the enemy and he was given leave to do so where they halted the enemy and grieved them. Hireis returned and mustered his well armed troops but felt that his troops were not receiving appropriate pay as they were only paid at hobbelars rate. The keeper has been instructed to pay them at that rate and requests that he be recompensed as one who has greatly harmed the enemy.

Carlisle, [Cumberland].

John le Hireis (Irish).
Note
The document is dated to 1317 on the basis of the dating given by Constance Fraser (Northern Petitions, p.62). The note attached to SC 8/317/E276 and Fraser's discussion of the two documents points to the discrepancy in the internal evidence as to the dating of the petitions, but it seems likely that they are contemporary and refer to the same events.
