Reference
SC 8/317/E273
Date
[c. 1314]
Description
Petitioners
Herbert la fiz Johan (Fitz John).
Name(s)
fiz Johan (Fitz John), Herbert
Addressees
King and council.
Nature of request
Fiz Johan requests remedy and that he is able to make a fine as he was granted the reversion of the manors of Woolverton, Market Weighton and Chirton by Fitz Reginald, and because the manors were held in chief, he approached Chancery and requested the chancellor that he be able to make a fine, and the chancellor ordered inquisitions to be made to enquire if it be to the king's damage, and although they found that it was not to the damage and they were returned into Chancery the chancellor and treasurer have still not assented to receive the fine.
Nature of endorsement
[None].
Places mentioned
Woolverton, [Hampshire]
Market Weighton, [East Riding of Yorkshire]
Chirton, [Wiltshire].
People mentioned
John le fiz Reynaud (Fitz Reginald).
Note
The petition dates to c. 1314 as the escheator was ordered to deliver the manors to another claimant on 17 October 1314. It seems unlikely that the petition can have been too distant in date from this order [CFR 1307-19, p.215]. In addition the inquisition ad quod damnum probably referred to in the petition survives as C 143/104/17 and dates to 8 Edw. II.
